Most promising researcher in robotics and artificial intelligence

The Fondazione Mondo Digitale ETS, to mark RomeCup 2027, is promoting – in collaboration with the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome – the fifth edition of the ‘Most Promising Researcher in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence’ award, to be presented to young researchers and PhD students engaged in research projects in the fields of robotics and/or artificial intelligence. The award benefits from the collaboration of prestigious universities and research centres.

A jury appointed by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome, comprising academics and representatives from the technical and scientific communities, will assess the nominations and select the winner, who will be announced on 15 April during RomeCup 2027.

The award aims to recognise and support the work of talented young researchers engaged in cutting-edge technological fields crucial to our country’s development, such as robotics and artificial intelligence.

Applications must be submitted by midnight on 28 February 2027

Research Award 2026

The fourth edition attracted 265 candidates, with 63 jurors from 41 universities and research centres. The awards ceremony took place on 29 April at 9.00 pm in the Esedra di Marco Aurelio at the Capitoline Museums.

The award was presented with the prestigious medal of the President of the Republic.

Winner: Massimiliano Mancini, University of Trento
Computer vision for autonomous robots, focusing on fairness and the ability to ‘unlearn’ sensitive data.

Winner of the ‘Tullio De Mauro’ Digital Humanities Award: Micol Spitale, Milan Polytechnic
Inclusive AI for group robotic interaction to support people with intellectual disabilities.

Special mention for best PhD student: Erik Gasparini, Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, Pisa
Development of LimbMATE, a low-cost bionic platform for the intuitive control of prosthetics.
